Charles Seton (1776-1836) settled in Florida around 1811, while Florida was under Spanish rule. After the Adams-Onis Treaty, he served as the first mayor of Fernandina. His daughter, Margaret, married Lewis Fleming. Margaret and Lewis's son, Francis P. Fleming (1841-1908), was the governor of Florida from 1889 to 1893.
Summary:
This collection consists of two letters from Francis P. Fleming and Charles Seton. The first letter, dated March 27, 1891, is from Francis P. Fleming in Tallahassee to his aunt, Rebecca Seton, in Fernandina. It discusses his aunt's poor health and the money he sends to support her. The collection includes the original letter and a typescript.
The second item is a typescript of a letter from Charles Seton in Fernandina to Zephaniah Kingsley on May 10, 1823. This letter, which also includes a formal petition, discusses the concerns of Fernandina residents regarding their need for an elected council and intendant to regulate local affairs of Fernandina and Amelia Island.
