Biographical/Historical:     John Finlayson (1810-1865) was a labor farmer and enslaver in Jefferson County, Florida. John was born in South Carolina to Daniel and Christiana (McRae) and worked as a merchant in Georgia from 1829 to 1839. He later purchased the Glendower Plantation labor farm in Jefferson County. He married Augustine Shehee (1826-1882) in 1842 and they had five children: Virginia, Mary, Augusta, John Jr., and Daniel.

    Finlayson was active in local affairs and public improvement efforts. He served as a representative for Jefferson County in the Florida House of Representatives (1846, 1850, and 1852) and later in the Florida Senate (1858-1861). He passed away on March 12, 1865.

Summary:     This collection consists of handwritten transcriptions of business and private correspondence concerning John Finlayson and his family. The business papers include materials about the Glendower labor farm and Finlayson's interests in the Georgia and Pensacola Railroad. The collection also includes several letters discussing personal experiences of the family, most notably those of John Finlayson's daughters, Virginia and Mary, who were away for college.
