Biographical/Historical:     Francis Wayles Eppes (1801-1881) was the grandson of President Thomas Jefferson. Born in Virginia, Eppes was a planter and enslaver. In 1829, he moved his family and several enslaved persons to Leon County, Florida, where he established a labor farm with a large number of enslaved Black laborers and served several terms as Tallahassee's mayor. He married twice in his lifetime and had 13 children.
Summary:     This single-item collection consists of a photocopy of a letter from Francis W. Eppes to his daughter, Jane C. Eppes. The letter primarily discusses religious ideas and the construction of a local church. There is also some discussion of local news.
