Biographical/Historical:     John Pope Duval (1790-1854) was the brother of William Pope Duval (1784-1854), Florida's first territorial governor from 1822 to 1834. Born in Virginia, John Pope Duval moved to Tallahassee in 1827. He moved to Kentucky in 1832 due to poor health, then to Texas in 1836 before returning to Florida to serve as Secretary of the Territory under Territorial Governor Richard Keith Call. In 1848, Duval served as Chairman of the State Democratic Convention in Madison County, where he opposed secession. He died in Tallahassee.

Summary:     This single-item collection consists of a letter that John Pope Duval wrote on October 27, 1849 while in Tallahassee, Florida. Duval addresses the letter to an unspecified "sir" and discusses an ongoing investigation into a financial claim made by heirs of a Captain E. Wan of North Carolina.
