George Austin Dekle (1820-1876) was born in Georgia to William and Bethany (Hollingsworth) Dekle. He married Roqsey Ann Neel (1823-1901) in Thomas County, Georgia, on May 15, 1843, where he was a labor farmer and enslaver. George and Roqsey moved their family to Marianna, Florida, in the mid-1860s. The couple and a majority of their ten children are buried in Campbellton Baptist Cemetery in Jackson County.
Summary:
This collection consists of various documents related to the personal and legal activities of George A. Deckle. The records include documentation of sale for U.S. Patent No. 135366, an invention known as an "Insect Trap," in Alabama in 1873; a personal letter, dated 1861; a record relating to the 98th Georgia Militia; and some legal documents.
The collection also includes seven bills of sale for enslaved persons from Florida, Georgia, and Virginia, dated between 1855 and 1863:
