Biographical/Historical:     James Diament Westcott, Jr. (1802-1880) was a United States Senator representing Florida from 1845 to 1849. Prior to his time as senator, he served as Florida's Territorial Secretary from 1830 to 1834, as Attorney General of the middle district until 1836, and then as a member of the Constitutional Convention delegation that created the first Florida Constitution in 1838. Westcott remained in Florida until his time in the U.S. Senate.
Summary:     This collection includes a letter dated June 2, 1841, between James D. Westcott and James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States. In the letter, Westcott discusses legal proceedings and actions in Florida, as well as related events in the Bahamas.
