	Biographical/Historical:	Sonata Manulani "Manu" Schuman Lyall was born in 1934 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Zena and Gustav "Scotty" Schuman. The Schuman family originated in Germany and moved to Hawaii in the 1890s. Gustave Adolf Schuman, Manu's great grandfather, founded the Schuman Carriage Company that introduced horses and carriages to the Hawaiian Islands. Manu graduated from Punahou High School in Honolulu and from Colorado State University with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. She married William Lord Lyall, III in 1955 while they were both veterinary students at Colorado State. After receiving their degrees, they started a family and moved to Lexington, Kentucky for a short time to work in a veterinary clinic. In 1961, they moved to Ocala, Florida to open a horses-only veterinary practice. At that time, there was a growth of thoroughbred horse farms in the area. Their home practice became the successful Lyall and Lyall Veterinarians. Meanwhile, the Lyalls were active members of the horse-enthusiast community: Manu joined the Florida Thorobred Fillies Division, a group of women connected to the Marion County Thoroughbred Industry, and Bill helped establish the Ocala Polo Club with other local veterinarians. Upon retirement, the Lyalls donated the land on which they built their practice to Redeemer Christian School and moved to an area in what is now The Villages near Lady Lake, Florida. Bill and Manu passed away in 2005 and 2015, respectively.
	Summary:	These records primarily document the life of Manulani Schuman from her youth in Hawaii to the beginning of her veterinary practice in Ocala. The records also provide some information about the growth of the thoroughbred industry in central Florida. This collection contains letters, mostly from Manu to her parents in Hawaii; news clippings from Hawaiian and Floridian newspapers that mention members of the Schuman family and the Lyalls; photographs of the Schuman and Lyall families; and a videotaped recording of Zena Schuman's 1998 funeral service.
