****DEACCESSIONED****The Division of Historical Resources, created in 1978 when the State Library and State Archives split from the Division of Archives, History and Records Management, is responsible for preserving and promoting Florida's historical, archaeological, and folk culture resources. The Division is comprised of two Bureaus: the Bureau of Historic Preservation and the Bureau of Archaeological Research, which assist with protecting and documenting the state's historic buildings, properties, and archaeological sites.
The Bureau of Archaeological Research (BAR) is responsible for the state's archaeology program, carrying out archaeological surveys and excavations throughout the state. They maintain records on historical resources and assist consultants and planners in protecting sites. The bureau's Underwater Archaeology Program includes not only historic shipwreck sites but also harbor and dock remains, fishing structures, and flooded land sites such as Warm Mineral Springs. In 1987, underwater archaeologists began working with local divers to develop a statewide system of underwater archaeological preserves to protect and interpret shipwrecks and other historic sites for the public.
The Conservation and Recreation Lands (CARL) Archaeological Program, now called the Public Lands Archaeology (PLA) Program, is responsible for assisting in the management of cultural resources located on state lands. Staff assess properties to identify areas of archaeological site probability, locate and record archaeological sites, and provide management recommendations for site conservation.

****DEACCESSIONED****This series includes slides, photographs, negatives, and video and audio tapes that document the archaeological projects and surveys performed by the Underwater Archaeology and the Conservation and Recreation Lands programs of the BAR. These multimedia materials provide insight into the processes of archaeological research, such as the preparation of a site for excavation, the documentation of uncovered artifacts, and the public relations aspect. The Bureau of Archaeological Research maintained the slides, photographs, and negatives in three-ring binders numbered as Folders 1 through 51, with Folders 11 and 30 missing. The folder listing reflects this original arrangement and numbering. The Warm Mineral Springs Phase I tapes in Boxes 16 through 23 are Sony Helical V-30H and V-32 1/2" videotapes primarily created by Wilburn "Sonny" Cockrell during his time as State Underwater Archaeologist of Florida; tapes 000 through 140 contain mostly dive footage and tapes 146 through 160 are of the 1980 Conference on Underwater Archaeology. The Phase II tapes in Boxes 24 through 26 are 8mm and videocassette, also mostly containing dive footage. Tapes containing copyright or duplicate footage were removed.
