Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Constitution of 1868 created the Office of Commissioner of Immigration with the responsibility of bringing settlers to Florida. The office expanded in 1871 to the Commissioner of Lands and Immigration, and the name changed again to Commissioner of Agriculture after the Constitutional revision of 1885. Lucius B. Wombwell was the first Commissioner of Agricuture in Florida, serving from 1888 until 1900.
Summary:     This series consists of a single letter to Commissioner of Agriculture L. B. Wombwell from G. B. Lamar, Jacksonville Fertilizer Inspector, regarding a "claim of exemption from Tax . . . an important question [that will] severely affect my business." The source of this letter is unknown.
