Biographical/Historical:     Established in October 1986 in Wakulla County, Florida, the Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park is a 6,000-acre wildlife sanctuary and home to the world's largest and deepest freshwater springs. The park gets its name from Edward Ball, a financier who wielded powerful political influence in Florida for decades, whose trust posthumously sold the land to the State of Florida in 1986.

Wakulla Springs became a state park in 1986, but glass-bottom boat tours have been conducted on the waterways since 1875. Long before achieving state park designation, Wakulla Springs brought in visitors who wished not only to see the wildlife, river fauna, and underwater mastodon bones, but also to be entertained by the folktales and unscripted tours provided by the local boat guides. The park also features a 1930s Spanish style lodge that Ball constructed in 1937.

Summary:     This collection contains reel-to-reel films (16mm; color, sound, and silent) documenting Wakulla Springs and other Edward Ball owned properties in Southwood, Leon County. The films primarily document the park's natural features and variety of wildlife, including alligators, bears, birds, and squirrels, as well as recreational activities such as swimming and boating.
