They moved to Marion County in 1852. Barco served as First Lieutenant with Company G, 9th Regiment, Florida Infantry ("Captain Gary's Company"). Union troops captured and imprisoned him near Baldwin, Florida, on February 10, 1864. They moved him through several Union prisons until he died of typhoid malarial fever in Fort Delaware, Delaware, in late July 1864.

Lucille Barco Coone presented transcriptions to the family at a 1970 family reunion at Silver Springs, Florida.

Summary:     This collection consists primarily of transcripts of letters from Lieutenant Joseph Barco to his wife Caroline during his Civil War service. Barco's letters date from April 26, 1863 through April 27, 1864, and a few subsequent letters from others notify Caroline of Joseph's illness and death.
