Biographical/Historical:     The Department of Environmental Protection was created by the Florida Environmental Reorganization Act of 1993 (93-213, Laws), merging the former Departments of Natural Resources and Environmental Regulation.  The Department's mission is to protect, conserve, and manage Florida's environment and natural resources. The Department's responsibilities include management and protection of Florida's marine resources, including endangered species and their habitats; protection, restoration, and management of environmentally important lands and their ecosystems; parks and recreation; water management; and pollution control and environmental protection.

The Acquisition and Restoration Council (ARC) was established in the Department of Environment Protection in 1999 (Section 259.035, Florida Statutes; Section 16, Ch. 99-247, Laws of Florida, effective March 1, 2000).  ARC was the successor to the Land Acquisition and Management Advisory Council (LAMAC) and LAMAC's predecessors, the Land Acquisition Advisory Council and the Land Acquisition Selection Committee.  ARC is responsible for the evaluation, selection and ranking of state land acquisition projects on the Florida Forever priority list; determination of final land acquisition project boundaries; and review of management plans and land use requests for all state-owned conservation lands. The final step in establishing the Florida Forever acquisition list is approval by the Governor and Cabinet sitting as the Board of Trustees of the Internal Improvement Trust Fund of the State of Florida.

ARC is a 10-member group comprised of four gubernatorial appointees; the Secretary of Environmental Protection, the Director of the Florida Forest Service of the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the Executive Director of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the Director of the Division of Historical Resources of the Department of State, or their designees; one member appointed by the Commissioner of Agriculture with a discipline related to agriculture including silviculture; and one member appointed by the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission with a discipline related to wildlife management or wildlife ecology.

Summary:     This series documents council and staff meetings of the Aquisition and Restoration Council and its predecessor the Land Aquisition and Management Advisory Council. The series includes audio cassette tape recordings, meeting summaries, and handwritten notes from the meetings.
