Biographical/Historical:     Shack Madison Gardner (1853-1923) was born in Thomas County, Georgia, to Allen and Catherine (Blackshear) Gardner as one of seven children. Following the Civil War, the Gardner family moved to Leon County, Florida. Shack Gardner married Rosetta Ferrell (b. 1860) in 1880 and they had seven children: Garfield, Bettie, Cornelius, James, Ellis, John, and Rosetta. Shack worked as a farmer and operated a general store, one of at least three Gardner's General Store locations operated by Shack and his brothers. The store was off of Miles Johnson Road in Barrow Hill, east Leon County.

Summary:     This collection consists of three ledger books from the Gardner's General Store that Shack Gardner owned and operated in Leon County, Florida. The ledgers document purchases and accounts at his store and include date of sale, customer names, purchased items, costs, and payments received. Each ledger has an index at the beginning. The ledgers are evidence of the economic conditions of an African-American businessman in the Deep South in the early 20th century. This collection also contains a photograph of Shack Gardner and wife, Rose, along with several unidentified family members.
