Biographical/Historical:     William Cabot Hodges (1876-1940) was born in Ashton, Illinois. He attended Indiana University and the University of Illinois. In 1896, he moved to Tallahassee, Florida where he practiced law. In June 1917, he married Margaret Wilson, and they lived at Goodwood Plantation in Tallahassee.

In 1922, Hodges won election to the Florida Senate from the eighth district, and in 1935 he served as President of the Senate. He was the State Senator from Leon County for 18 years. Hodges earned the nickname "Homestead Bill" for championing the homestead tax exemption. He twice ran unsuccessfully for governor: in 1912 as a "Bull Moose" candidate, and in 1936 as a Democrat.

Summary:     This collection consists of a single election campaign flyer of William Cabot Hodges from the first nominating primary of the 1936 gubernatorial election. The flyer promotes Hodges as "Homestead Bill," proclaiming his support for the Homestead Exemption Amendment first approved by Florida voters in 1934, and warning of the threat of repeal should Hodges lose the election.
