Biographical/Historical:     George Pettus Raney (1845-1911) was born in Apalachicola, Florida. After serving in the Civil War, he became a lawyer and practiced in Apalachicola. Also active as a Democratic politician, Raney served in the House of Representatives, as Attorney General under Governor George F. Drew, and on the Florida Supreme Court (1885-1894).

    Raney married Mary Elizabeth Lamar (Lizzie), niece of United States Supreme Court Justice Lucius Q. C. Lamar, in 1873. Following her death, he married Evelyn Bird Cameron, sister of Virginia governor William E. Cameron, in 1901. Not long after their marriage, she died in a fire after falling down a flight of stairs carrying an oil lamp. After Raney's death in 1911, his home in Apalachicola was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The David G. Raney House is named for G.P. Raney's father, a successful cotton trader who built the house in 1838.

    G. P. and Lizzie Raney had four children: George Pettus Raney, Jr., Sarah Bailey Raney, Clyde Lamar Raney (female), and Thompson Lamar Raney, Sr. Thompson Lamar Raney married Priscilla Bradbury Bartlett, and they had four children: Thompson Lamar Raney, Jr., Joseph Bartlett Raney, Sarah Frances Raney, and George Pettus Raney, III. Thompson Lamar Raney, Jr. (1920-2005) served many years in the military, retiring from the Army in 1978, and is a member of the Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame. During World War II, he fought at Omaha Beach in France as well as in Belgium and Germany, and he later served in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.

Summary:     This collection of Raney family papers includes correspondence, photographs, legal documents, and other papers primarily concerning Raney family members and their relation to the Lamar family, the Oven family, and the Bellamy, Bailey, and Porter families. The collection includes a copy of the will of David G. Raney; images and wills of Judge George Pettus Raney and his first wife Mary Elizabeth Lamar Raney; papers documenting legal issues and proceedings concerning the family inheritance of property in Apalachicola; and photographs, genealogical information, and other papers regarding Thompson Lamar Raney, Sr., Thompson Lamar Raney, Jr., and other family relations. Particularly notable in the collection are a daguerreotype of Sarah Burch Bailey Lamar and an ambrotype of Thompson Bird Lamar; the Lamars were the parents of Mary Elizabeth Lamar Raney.
