Biographical/Historical:     Wyatt Jackson Meyer was born December 17, 1869 in the log cabin built by his parents on the north bank of the Anclote River near what would become Tarpon Springs, Florida. The Meyers were the first white settlers in the area, and Wyatt is believed to be the first non-Native American person born there.

The family built a general store and planted citrus trees, and Wyatt became active in the area's developing sponge industry and in buying and selling real estate. He also helped build the Anclote Key Lighthouse where his older brother Robert S. (b. 1867) served as assistant and principal keeper from October 1889 to February 1933. Wyatt Meyer and his wife Alice Brown Meyer raised six children in Tarpon Springs. Meyer died in Tarpon Springs on August 28, 1958.

Summary:     This collection contains travel diaries and photographs documenting Wyatt J. Meyer's travels and nature explorations through Florida from Kissimmee to Fort Myers and through the Everglades. The three travel diaries describe his travels and 110 photographs depict Native Americans, nature scenes, wildlife, and camp life. The collection also includes a transcription of the diary documenting his Everglades trip (March-May 1893).
