Biographical/Historical:     Doyle Conner's service in Florida government began in 1950 when he was elected to Florida's House of Representatives.  During this time, Conner was a sophomore at the University of Florida working towards his Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture.  Before completion of his degree, Conner was re-elected for a second term to the House of Representatives.

In 1960, Doyle Conner became Florida's first elected Commissioner of Agriculture, overseeing the state's second largest industry. He succeeded Commissioner Nathan Mayo, who died in office in 1960.  At the age of 32, Conner was the youngest cabinet member in Florida's state history.

As the Commissioner of Agriculture, Doyle Conner helped to create the Office of Consumer Services in 1967.  In addition, during his tenure as agriculture commissioner, "he confronted some of the most serious threats that has faced Florida's farming industry, including citrus canker, brucellosis in cattle and the invasions of the Mediterranean fruit fly" (Tampa Tribune, 1987). Doyle Conner was re-elected seven times as Commissioner of Agriculture and retired at the end of his 1989 term.

Summary:     This series contains Doyle Conner's preliminary and final draft speeches during the 1980s when he was Commissioner of Agriculture. Included are Conner's remarks discussing the role agriculture plays in Florida made during state conferences, fairs and festivals, employee orientations, and before civic organizations and various other Florida associations.
