The Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services was created in 1969 (Ch. 69-106, Laws). It replaced the Dept. of Agriculture (1889, Ch. 3857, Laws). It administers several agricultural councils, commissions and boards. Its Divisions regulate food products and petroleum products; control pests, diseases, and forests; maintain the citrus code; and provide consumer services. The Commissioner of Agriculture is a member of the elected Cabinet, and the Commissioner can succeed himself for an unlimited number of four-year terms.
Summary:
This series contains the files of the Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services, 1980-1991, regarding the Surface Water Improvement and Management (SWIM) plans of the Water Management Districts. In compliance with the Surface Water Improvement and Management Act (Ch. 87-97, Laws), the Department reviewed the plans to determine the effects of the plans on the agricultural resources of the area. The records consist of draft and revised copies of the SWIM plans submitted by the Northwest Florida Water Management District, the South Florida Water Management District, the Southwest Florida Water Management District, Suwannee River Water Management District, and the St. Johns Water Management District. Also included are some related water resources management reports and studies from other agencies.
The SWIM plans document the agricultural, ecological, aesthetic, recreational, and economic value of surface water systems in the state. The water systems included are lakes (Alligator, Apopka, Banana, Okeechobee, Panasoffkee, and Tarpon); rivers (Crystal, Falling Creek, Indian, Kissimmee, Oklawaha, Rainbow, Santa Fe, St. Johns, Steinhatchee, and Suwannee); bays (Biscayne, Charlotte Harbor, Kings, Pensacola, and Tampa); and the Everglades.
The series does not contain any correspondence or recommendations of the Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services regarding the SWIM plans.
