Biographical/Historical:     The Department of Children and Families was created by Section 20.19, Florida Statutes, in the 1996 legislative section.  The department's secretary is appointed by the Governor. The agency is responsible for the safety, well-being, and welfare of abused, neglected, and abandoned children, the elderly, people with disabilites, and those suffering from mental illness and/or substance abuse problems. It also maintains partnerships with local communities in assisting people to become economically self-sufficient, thereby creating stable families and communities. The department has the overall responsibility of all family services offered by the state.
Governor Lawton Chiles' Executive Order 93-269 established the Governor's Task Force on Domestic Violence in September 1993 to identify and recommend resources and actions needed to end domestic violence.  The Task Force expanded its activities with federal funding under the federal Violence Against Women Act (1994).  The Task Force was continued by Executive Order 96-39 (as the Governor's Task Force on Domestic and Sexual Violence) and, under Governor Jeb Bush, by Executive Order 99-99.
Summary:     This series documents the participation of the Department of Children and Families as a state agency liaison at meetings of the Governor's Task Force on Domestic Violence from May 1, 1998 to May 31, 2000.  The records relate to a variety of issues discussed at the meetings such as the status of domestic violence legislative proposals, domestic violence in the justice system, domestic violence education and law enforcement training, domestic violence grant programs, domestic violence intervention and response, and the background and past initiatives and accomplishments of the Task Force.  The files include such materials as meeting agendas, reports and other discussion materials, correspondence discussing Task Force operations, brochures relating to domestic violence programs and services, and drafts of legislative bills.
