The Perkins family was a prominent white family in Tallahassee, Florida. In 1837, Thomas James Perkins (1817-1896) moved from Kent County, Maryland to settle in Tallahassee. He worked for a railroad company and was a partner in a cotton trading business. He and his wife Amelia Mather Keowin Perkins (1824-1897) had ten children: George Walker, John Day, Frances Elizabeth, Ida Taylor, Annie Berry, William Wightman, Mary Aurelia, Florence Papy, Thomas James, and Lawrence Anderson.
John Day Perkins (1843-1904), the second son of Thomas and Amelia, married Joanna Dot Wilson Perkins (1845-1908) in 1865 and they had seven children: William Moore, Ida Gray, George Betton, Thomas Eugene, Maggie May, Charles Wilson, and John Earle.
Ida Gray Perkins (1868-1892) was the oldest daughter of John Day and Joanna Perkins. She was married to William M. McIntosh, Jr. for seven months before she died of typhoid fever.

This collection contains personal letters, clippings, and other papers documenting the lives, activities, and relationships of the Perkins family of Tallahassee, Florida. The collection primarily consists of letters of Ida Gray Perkins McIntosh. Her letters date from 1880 to 1894 and include correspondence between Ida's parents, cousins, suitors, and husband.
