Biographical/Historical:     Riddle Field, near Clewiston, Florida, was a training field for military pilots. Providing primary, basic, and advanced training for both British and American pilots during World War II, the facility opened in 1941 and remained operational through 1945.

    Beatrice Swain Szumanski (1924-2010) was a Florida native who worked at Riddle Field for two years starting in 1943. After the war, she married Frank Szumanski and then volunteered with the St. Lucie County Civil Defense Council, Medical Division.

Summary:     This collection consists of photographs and papers documenting Beatrice Swain Szumanski's time assisting at Riddle Field for British Royal Air Force cadet pilot training. The collection includes group photographs of graduating classes (Course 17, Course 19 and Course 22); a group photo of eight instructors/officers, including Wing Commander Charles W. Lindsay; images of Swain's friend and RAF cadet Alan Davidson; a certificate of appreciation to "Bertha Swain" for her assistance "to the British Mission in North America;" and an invitation to the graduation ceremony for the cadets of Course 23 on 16 June 1945.
