Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Legislature established the Canal Authority in 1933 to acquire the land and equipment necessary to build and operate a shipping canal across the peninsula of Florida(Ch. 16176, Laws of Florida). The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction in September 1935 under President Roosevelt's allocation of $5 million in Emergency Relief Funds. However, Congress refused to allocate additional funds for the project and construction halted when funds ran out in June 1936. From the 1940s through the 1970s, public interest in and federal funding for the project waxed and waned, and construction halted and re-started several times. Eventually, at the recommendation of the Corps of Enginers, Florida's Governor and Cabinet passed a resolution agreeing to the project's deauthorization in January 1991.
Summary:     This single-item collection consists of a brochure produced by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, promoting completion of the Cross Florida Barge Canal and providing maps, diagrams, summary statistics, history, financial information, and environmental information regarding the proposed project.
