Biographical/Historical:     Edward A. Mueller (1923-2014) was born in Madison, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin and Notre Dame for his bachelor's degree, and earned a Master's Degree in civil engineering from Catholic University. He joined the United States Navy following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, and served in World War II from 1943-1945 before going into the Naval Reserves for 20 years, retiring as Lieutenant Commander.

    In 1955, Mueller moved to Tallahassee, Florida, with his wife to work for the State Road Department, Traffic Engineering and Highway Planning Division. He later worked for the Highway Research Board in Washington D.C. before returning to Florida in 1969 to work with the newly-created Department of Transportation. He served as Florida's first Secretary of Transportation from 1970 to 1973 and then as director of the Jacksonville Transportation Authority from 1973 to 1981.

    Mueller had particular interest in the history of steamboats, a topic on which he authored several books. He served the Florida Maritime Museum as curator, president and executive director, and as a guest editor of "Steamboat Bill," the journal of the Steamship Historical Society of America.

Summary:     This collection consists of photographic negatives collected by Edward A. Mueller depicting Florida rivers, waterways, steamships, and steamship companies. The collection includes images of the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee, and Flint Rivers (226 negatives); Florida's east coast (212); Florida's interior (34); Florida's west coast (333); the St. Johns River (1,090); the Pensacola area (80); the Peninsular and Occidental Steamship Company (108); the Ocklawaha River (354); the Kissimmee River area (219); the Suwannee River (42); the Fernandina area (35); the Lake Okeechobee/Caloosahatchee River area (47); the Atlantic Ocean, South Carolina, and Georgia coasts (48); the Ocklawaha River (C. Bradford Mitchell negatives - 52); the Alabama area (36); Merchants and Miners Transportation Company (6); and various other scenes (233).
