In 1973, the Military Department became the Department of Military Affairs (Ch. 73-93, Laws). The Adjutant General has served as the military head of the Guard since its inception. The Department and the Adjutant General control the Florida units of the National Guard; supervise all the arms, troops, branches, and stores of the Guard; and transport and subsist any armed forces required by the state to maintain law and order. The National Guard maintains its headquarters in St. Augustine.
