Biographical/Historical:     In 1845, the issue of slavery divided the Methodist Episcopal Church into north and south methodism. When Florida attained statehood, the Leon Circuit was placed in the Tallahassee District in the Florida Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The Leon Circuit originally covered Leon (except Tallahassee), Gadsden, Jefferson, and Wakulla counties. Churches in the Leon Circuit met on a quarterly basis to report and record their activities.

Chaires United Methodist Church organized in Tallahassee as Mount Zion Church in 1862. It became New Hope Church in 1887, and then Chaires Methodist Church in 1892. Over the years, Chaires Methodist Church has been a part of the Waukeenah Circuit; the Leon Circuit; the East Leon Circuit; the Miccosukee, Chaires, Lloyd, and Springfield Circuit; and the Chaires-Lloyd Circuit. The Chairs, Lloyd, and Springfield Methodist Churches were under the same pastor in an organization called a charge.

In 1939, three Methodist organizations -- the Methodist Episcopal Church, South; the Methodist Episcopal Church; and the Methodist Protestant Church -- reunified into the United Methodist Church of the United States.

Summary:     This collection contains records documenting the history of Chaires Methodist Church, later Chaires United Methodist Church, and its partners in the local charge, Lloyd and Springfield Methodist Churches.  Most of the records document church operations through reports filed by the pastor and various committees/societies, which the Methodist Discipline requires. These reports include listings of pastors and members of the congregations, as well as the finances of the churches in the charge.
