Biographical/Historical:     When the federal government requested that Florida provide one battalion of five companies for service in the Mexican War, Florida responded by creating companies under the commands of Captains Robert G. Livingston, William W.J. Kelly, Henry E.W. Clark, Allen G. Johnson, and William Fisher. These commanders recruited volunteers from the militiamen of their home areas. The first four companies mustered in throughout 1847. Johnson's company mustered in January 8, 1847 at Fort Brooke, Kelly's at Pensacola on April 9, Livingston's at Tallahassee on August 13, and Clark's at Fort Moultrie, South Carolina on October 15.

Of these five companies, only three saw active service in Mexico: Livingston's, Kelly's, and Clark's. Livingston's and Kelly's companies served as Florida troops; Clark's mustered into the regular army as Company K, Thirteenth U.S. Infantry. Johnson's company served at Fort Brooke in Tampa, while Fisher's company was essentially Johnson's company revived for an extra year of service at Fort Brooke. The three active companies primarily guarded the wagon trains and supply depots of the main forces in central Mexico. Fifty-five men died in the war but only one, William Gilliland of Tallahassee, died in action. The rest died of disease or, in the case of Captain Livingston, due to accident.

Summary:     The series contains a volume of photostatic copies of muster rolls of Florida independent companies who served in the Mexican War. The muster rolls in this volume are for the Florida independent companies under Johnson, Kelly, Livingston, and Fisher. Johnson's company served from January 8, 1847 to January 8, 1848; Kelly's company served from April 9, 1847 to March 31, 1848; Livingston's from August 13, 1847 to July 8, 1848; and Fisher's from January 9 to June 30, 1848.

The muster rolls contain the name, rank, and age of soldier; when, where, and by whom they enrolled; when, where, and by whom they mustered into service; when last paid; number of miles travelled; subsistence and forage furnished by themselves; clothing due to them; value of equipment, arms, etc. received from the United States; value in dollars of horses and horse equipment; and remarks.
