Approximately 15,000 Floridians served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. Florida troops organized into 12 infantry regiments, two cavalry regiments, and multiple other battalions, batteries, and independent companies.
Most Floridians served outside the state during the war. The Second, Fifth, and Eighth Infantry Regiments (joined in 1864 by the Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Infantry Regiments) served in General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia from 1862 to 1865. They participated in major battles such as the Williamsburg, the Seven Days, Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and Petersburg. Another Florida Brigade served in the war's Western Theater, comprised of the First Cavalry Regiment and the First, Third, Fourth, Sixth, and Seventh Regiments of Infantry. Floridians fought and died at Shiloh, Murfreesboro, the Vicksburg Campaign, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, the Atlanta Campaign, Franklin, Nashville, and Bentonville.
The troops that remained in Florida fought at Olustee, Marianna, and Natural Bridge, and in several smaller skirmishes. Floridians laid down their arms in April and May 1865 at the end of the war. During the conflict, about 5,000 Floridian soldiers died of wounds or disease.
Summary:
This series consists of records documenting individuals who served in Confederate military units from Florida. It includes units mustered into Confederate service and those that remained in state service during the war. The muster rolls generally include the name and rank of the soldier, when and where they enrolled, payroll information, and remarks. At the end of the series are non-unit rolls from the Chattahoochee Arsenal and the Warrington Naval Yard (Pensacola). A microfilm copy is available.
