Biographical/Historical:     Nathan Mayo (1876-1960) was Florida's fourth and longest serving Commissioner of Agriculture. His career began in 1901 when he opened the Mayo-Lyles Store at Summerfield, Florida. He later expanded his business ventures into farming, citrus growing, the turpentine industry (1905), and cotton ginning (1916). Mayo began public life as a Marion county commissioner in 1913 before representing Marion County in the Florida House of Representatives in 1921 and 1923. In 1923, Governor Cary A. Hardee appointed Mayo as Commissioner of Agriculture, a post he held until his death in 1960.

Other families documented in this collection are the Rolland family of Tallahassee, Florida, and the Duncan family of Oklawaha (Ocala), Florida. Ellsworth O. Rolland was the Executive Director of the Board of Administration in Tallahassee during the 1960s through 1972. In 1945 he married Madeline Duncan Rolland, the niece of Nora Newsom Mayo (Nathan Mayo's wife). Julia Mayo Duncan was the mother of Madeline Rolland.

Summary:     This collection consists of correspondence, news clippings, and photographs of the related Mayo, Rolland, and Duncan families of Tallahassee and Ocala, Florida. Most of the correspondence is from Julia Mayo Duncan to Madeline Rolland (Mrs. E.O. Rolland). Of interest are letters between Commissioner Mayo and Mrs. A.L. Harrison concerning Mayo family genealogy. In addition, there are a few letters between Commissioner Mayo and E.O. Rolland at the State Board of Administration.
