Biographical/Historical:     Gertrude Marie Petersen (1892-1972) was born in Elliston, Benton Township, Ohio. Ross Wesley Winne (1882-1960) was born in Nina, Carroll Township, Ohio. Gertrude and Ross married on June 10, 1910 and the following year settled on Torry Island in the southeast end of Lake Okeechobee, only the second family to do so. The creek near which they settled is now named Winne Creek, and a small nearby inlet on the shoreline is named Winne Cove (alternatively referred to as "Winnie's Cove").

The Winnes lived in a tent for their first six months on the island before they were able to build their first small house. Ross worked as a commercial fisherman and later as a hunting and fishing guide, and Gertrude grew vegetables and managed the house as well as their growing family.

In the early 1950s, Gertrude Peterson Winne began recording her memories of her pioneering years on Torry Island. In 2010, her granddaughter Patricia Winne Adams edited and published the reminiscences as Memoirs of an Everglades Pioneer (Editorial Rx Press, Orange Park, Florida). The publication includes later writings not included in the collection, providing Gertrude Winne's first-hand account of her family's experiences in the devastating hurricanes of 1928 and 1949.

Summary:     This collection consists of 11 handwritten volumes in which Gertrude Peterson Winne recounts her experiences as a Torry Island pioneer with her husband and baby son. She discusses her train travels from her native Ohio to Jacksonville and then Fort Myers in late 1911; traveling by boat to Torry Island; clearing land for their tent and later their house; the challenges of travel, weather, isolation, and illness; encounters with settlers on neighboring islands; and their daily work and family life.
