Biographical/Historical:     The Legislative Council of the Florida Territory created the post of Adjutant General in 1832 and continued it into statehood. Under the 1868 Constitution, the Adjutant General was a member of the Cabinet and as such, was part of the Board of Commissioners of State Institutions. However, the 1885 Constitution excluded the Adjutant General from the Cabinet. In 1921, the Florida Legislature placed the Adjutant General as head of the newly-created state Military Department. In 1973, the department's name changed to the Department of Military Affairs. The Adjutant General controls all Florida units of the National Guard, supervises all arms, troops, branches, and stores of the Guard, and transports and subsists any armed forces required by the state to maintain law and order.

Summary:     The series contains orders issued by the Office of the Adjutant General relating to the operation of the Florida Naval Militia from 1911 to 1917. Most of these orders deal with discharges, appointments, and physical examinations for members of the Naval Militia.
