Biographical/Historical:     In 2000, the Department of State began planning for a "Museum of Florida Political History and Governance" which would explore the rich political legacy of Florida government on citizens' lives and emphasize the importance of public service and citizen participation.  Particular emphasis was placed upon the state's legislative history in order to instill in the public and newly elected officials a sense of the common threads of policy and procedure that were present in the state's early years that remain timely today.
As part of the planning and information gathering for this museum, the Division of Historical Resources conducted a series of oral history interviews with former Florida legislators.  The museum planners intended for the interviews to become central exhibits.  The interview tapes and transcripts were placed in the custody of the State Archives and later transferred to the Legislative Research Center & Museum.
Summary:     This series documents plans for conducting oral history interviews with prominent and influential political figures from Florida's legislative past.  The series includes correspondence relating to the project, draft questionnaires, and copies of news articles, photographs, and other background materials concerning intended subjects of the interviews including U.S. Representative Carrie Meek; Senate President Toni Jennings; House Speaker and Senate President Mallory Horne; Senator and Representative Warren S. Henderson; Representative, Senator, and Governor Reubin Askew; Speaker of the House and Governor Farris Bryant; House Speaker Ralph Turlington; House Speaker Doyle Conner; and Representative and Senator Mary Grizzle.
