Biographical/Historical:     Ulys Bowdoin Marsh (1919-2012) was born in Coffee County, Alabama, near the town of New Brockton. In 1923, the Marsh family moved to Leon County, Florida, and operated Marshes Dairy. After graduating from Leon High School, Marsh joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. Afterwards, he spent 34 years with the Railway Express Company in Tallahassee. After retiring from the railroad, Marsh then worked for the State of Florida in the State Division of Security.

Marsh was a founding member of the Tallahassee Genealogical Society and published three books on the Marsh and Bowdoin families: A Research of the Bowdoin Family in the United States (1982); John Marsh of Craven and Kershaw Counties, South Carolina and His Descendants and Research Notes on Marsh (1987); John Marsh of South Carolina and Research Notes on Marsh (1992).

Summary:     This collection consists primarily of genealogical records collected by U. Bowdoin Marsh from approximately 1970 to 2000 for his research into the history of several family lines, primarily the Marsh and Bowdoin families. The papers consist of family name files, correspondence, newspaper articles, genealogical newsletters, copies of wills, land records, census records, historical records, maps, and other miscellaneous items. The dates of the materials range from 1610 to 2005, although most of the items appear to be from the 1700s to the 1950s.
