Biographical/Historical:     The Byrd family was a prominent white family in Leon County, Florida. Flavius Augustus Byrd and his wife Catharine Sarah Blake moved from North Carolina to Florida in the mid-1800s. The Byrd family operated a successful grocery store, T.B. Byrd Grocery, in Tallahassee from the late 1800s through the mid-1900s.

    The Van Brunt family was also a prominent white family in Leon County, Florida. Edward James Van Brunt (1854-1898) and his wife Susan Ellen Dickey (1857-1939) lived in Tallahassee with their seven children, who were friends with children in the Byrd family. Their oldest son William Edwin Van Brunt married Lina Clifton Byrd in 1912. Lina was the granddaughter of Flavius Augustus Byrd.

Summary:     This collection consists of images of the Van Brunt and Byrd families of Tallahassee, Florida, primarily portraits of family members and friends.  Among the photographs are daguerreotypes, tintypes, and albumen prints.
