Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Chapter of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States (NAPUS) received its founding charter in 1935. That same year, the Florida Chapter attended the national convention for the first time, and the chapter held its first state convention in 1941. The Florida Chapter focuses upon the issues of postmasters and the postal service by working towards efficient and economical postal work and improved conditions for all postmasters, no matter the size of the affiliated office. The Florida Chapter works with the public, taking part in post office dedications and improving the understanding of how the postal service operates.

In the early years of its existence, the chapter's members actively recruited throughout the state. Increased membership during the 1950s led to increased attendance at both chapter and national conventions. During this time of expansion, the Florida Chapter published its first newsletter, "The Gator Postmaster." The Florida Chapter continues to encourage its membership to attend the yearly state and national conventions and to recruit new members.

Summary:     This collection documents the organization and major activities of the Florida Chapter of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States. It includes records of constitutions and their revisions, proposed resolutions, by-laws, and financial and membership records. The collection also includes correspondence between postmasters, records of post office dedications, newspaper clippings, national and state newsletters, scrapbooks, photographs, and convention materials.

The convention materials document multiple state and national conventions, and include brochures from conventions and memorial services, notes, convention briefs, survey materials, convention schedules, state postmaster directories, and daily newsletters from national conventions. Most of the photos and supplementing materials document the recreation side of conventions and other events connected to the Florida Chapter.

Some compact disks within the collection have damage to their surfaces, leaving some of the photos inaccessible.

For preservation purposes, chapter newsletters published on newsprint from 1987-1990 and 1993 are boxed separately. Newsletter volume 15 possesses errors in issue numbering.
