Biographical/Historical:     The M.S. St. Louis left Hamburg, Germany for Havana, Cuba on May 13, 1939 carrying 937 passengers, mostly refugees fleeing Nazi persecution.  When the Cuban government refused entry to all but 28 passengers, the ship headed for south Florida in hopes that the United States would accept the refugees.  When the United States refused to allow the ship to dock, it began the return trip to Europe on June 6, 1939.  Subsequently, 254 of its passengers died under the Nazi regime.
Summary:     This series consists primarily of a copy of United States Senate Resolution 111 dated May 19, 2009, which briefly recounts the voyage of the M.S. St. Louis; marks the 70th anniversary of its return to Europe after most of its passengers were denied admittance to the United States; and honors the memory of those passengers.  The original Resolution was signed by the 33 surviving passengers.  This copy also bears the original signature of one passenger who signed again on behalf of the other 32 on December 14, 2009, at a ceremony held by the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County to commemorate the anniversary.  The series also includes a letter from the Library of Congress Duplication Services office to Governor Charlie Crist authenticating the copy, and a letter from the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County presenting the copy to the State of Florida.
