Biographical/Historical:     Dr. Alonzo Lashbrook Blalock, M.D., (1862-1946) was born in Cherry Lake, Madison County, Florida. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Emory College in 1883 and worked as a teacher in Florida schools. He received his medical degree in 1886 from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After practicing briefly in Macon, Georgia and Ocala, Florida, Blalock returned to Madison County. He was appointed a member of the new State Medical Examining Board in 1905. He served on the board until 1913 and continued practicing in Madison, focusing on diseases affecting women and children. He was a lifelong advocate of prohibition, a leader in the Methodist Church, and a Mason, serving eight years as master of the Madison Lodge.

Summary:     This fragmentary collection documents Dr. Alonzo Blalock's life and his medical interests and activities.  The collection includes Blalock family genealogical information dating back to the Revolutionary War, a biographical article on Dr. Blalock detailing his accomplishments and community activities, two glass blood sample slides and test result notes, and a manuscript about life in Cherry Lake and changes resulting from Reconstruction.

    The collection also includes a treatise by Dr. Blalock, titled "Malaria and Dengue Clinically and Microscopically." In his treatise, Dr. Blalock discusses the history of the diseases, preventative measures, classifications of different types of infections, instructions on proper blood smear examinations, symptoms and diagnosis, and treatments. He also discusses several cases that he treated, especially during the 1922 epidemic.
