Biographical/Historical:
The Florida Legislature created the Military Department in 1921 (Chapter 8502, Laws of Florida). The head of the department was the Adjutant General, and its headquarters were in St. Augustine. The Military Department and the Adjutant General controlled the Florida units of the National Guard; supervised all the arms, troops, branches, and stores of the Guard; and transported and supported any armed forces required by the state to maintain law and order. The Military Department became the Department of Military Affairs in 1973 (Ch 73-93, Laws). The state militia has existed since territorial days, becoming the Florida State Troops in 1887 (Ch. 3707, Laws) and the Florida National Guard in 1909 (Ch. 5930, Laws).
Summary:
This series contains a summary of the citizens of Florida who served in the armed forces of the United States during World War I from 1916 to 1920. It lists the name, race, period served, the branch served in, ranks attained, those killed or wounded, and any awards or citations earned. The staff of the Military Department created these summaries during a project in 1925.
The first volume contains both state and county statistical summaries of how many officers and enlisted served in the Army, Navy, or Marine Corps, and the number of dead and wounded or deserted. It includes Army statistics for Black and white servicemembers separately; the Marine Corps and Navy did not commission or enlist non-whites at that time. The county listings include name, race, rank if an officer, branch of service, place of residence and period of service.
