Biographical/Historical:     The Great Fire of 1901 occurred in Jacksonville, Florida, on May 3, 1901. When a spark from the Cleaveland Fibre Factory ignited a nearby pile of Spanish moss, the blaze quickly grew out of control. It burned for eight hours through Downtown Jacksonville, destroying more than 2,000 structures and leaving almost 10,000 residents homeless. The Great Fire of 1901 was one of the worst disasters in Florida history and is the third largest urban fire in the United States, behind the 1871 Great Chicago Fire and the 1906 San Francisco fire.

Edwin Hansford Rennolds, Sr. (1839-1912) was born in Virginia and lived in Tennessee before moving with his family to Jacksonville, Florida, sometime between 1885 and 1900. Cora Annie Rennolds (1874-1939) was born in Tennessee, one of six children to Edwin and his wife Margaret.

Summary:     This collection consists of two writings by Cora Annie Rennolds Markert and her father Edwin Hansford Rennolds, Sr., both of Jacksonville, Florida, recounting the Jacksonville Fire of May 3, 1901. The first item is a poem that Cora wrote, titled, "The Organ's Song: An Incident of the Jacksonville Fire." It describes in verse the sound of a church organ that played by itself during the fire. A postscript explains that "the instrument was pumped automatically. When the flames enwrapped it, the pump began to work and the pipes to breathe forth the most soulful music." The second item is a chapter from a typescript autobiography of Edwin, recounting his eyewitness account of the fire. There is no indication of when these individuals authored these materials.
