	Biographical/Historical:	The first State Livestock Sanitary Board was created in 1917 (ch. 7345) and consisted of the Commissioner of Agriculture, Superintendent of Public Instruction, State Treasurer, and two other Governor-appointed members. This board was succeeded by a new State Livestock Sanitary Board created in 1923 (Ch. 9201, Laws) to regulate Florida's livestock industry. With seven to nine members chosen by the governor, the board regulated the import and export of meat and livestock, inspected meat sellers, and controlled animal diseases such as cattle tick fever, hog cholera, and tuberculosis. The 1923 board was also charged with appointing a state veterinarian to oversee day to day operations. The first state veterinarian under this new board was J.V. Knapp. His successor in 1952 was C.L. Campbell, who served until 1961. In 1953, the Board's name was changed to the Florida Livestock Board. That board was then abolished in January 1961, and its duties transferred to the Department of Agriculture's newly created Division of Animal Industry (Ch. 59-54; Ch. 61-59, Laws). After 1969, the Division continued as part of the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the successor agency to the Department of Agriculture. The duties of the Division include protecting the Florida livestock industry through the control and eradication of brucellosis, tuberculosis, cholera, and other dangerous transmissible diseases of livestock; maintaining animal and poultry disease diagnostic laboratories; inspecting meat and poultry at slaughter; inspecting processing and packaging plants; and recording livestock marks and brands. The Director of the Division also serves as State Veterinarian.
	Summary:	This series contains typescript volumes of minutes of the State Livestock Sanitary Board from its establishment in 1917 until the Department of Agriculture, Division of Animal Industry assumed it's functions in January 1961; and the Animal Industry Technical Council (also known as the Animal Industry Technical Committee), successor to the Board, from 1961 to 1998. The records document the full range of the agency's responsibilities, including disease and insect prevention and eradication; quarantines; spraying and dipping; development and operation of diagnostic laboratories; inspection and testing; livestock market regulations; and agency operating budgets.
