Biographical/Historical:     The Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola is a United States Navy base near Warrington, Florida, on the southern tip of Escambia County. Originally called Warrington Naval Yard, the base was a strategic location during the first years of the Civil War. In 1911, Congress passed the Naval Appropriation Act to provide resources for aeronautical development. In 1913, the Secretary of the Navy appointed a board to survey aeronautical needs and to establish a policy to guide future development. One of the board's recommendations was the establishment of an aviation training station in Pensacola. In 1914 the Navy expanded its role in Pensacola development by establishing the U.S. Naval Aeronautical Station.

The station's aeronautical training activity slowed until the establishment of its cadet training program in 1935. From 1935 through World War II, the Naval Air Station continued to expand its programs and facilities.

Summary:     This collection contains seven black and white images of United States Navy planes in the Pensacola area. The images are undated with no other identifying information, although they are most likely from the World War II era.
