The post of Governor of the state was created in the 1838 Constitution (Article III, Section 1, 1838 Constitution; Article IV, Section 1, 1885 and 1968 Constitutions; Ch. 14 FS) and became effective in 1845. The Governor serves a four-year term and, since 1968, can succeed himself for one term.John Ellis "Jeb" Bush, the forty-third Governor of Florida, began his gubernatorial term on January 5, 1999. After graduating from the University of Texas in Austin, Bush pursued a banking career in Houston, Venezuela and back to Houston. Bush was convinced to come to Florida from Texas in 1980 by builder Armando Codina. Prior to being elected Governor, he had served as president and chief operating officer of the Miami-based Codina Group, a real estate development company. Since his arrival in Florida, he has been active in civic and political affairs. Bush served as Florida's Secretary of Commerce under Governor Bob Martinez and he was the Republican nominee for governor in 1994. He established the Foundation for Florida's Future, volunteered to assist the Miami Children's Hospital, the United Negro College Fund of South Florida, the United Way of Dade County, and the Dade County Homeless Trust. In 1995, he wrote "Profiles in Character," a book profiling 14 of Florida's civic heroes. He has been married to Columba Garnica Gallo, a native of Leon, Mexico since 1977 and they have three children, George, Noelle and John Ellis, Jr. In 2003, Bush took the oath of office for his second term, having defeated Democrat Bill McBride.
The Governor is the Chief Executive Officer of the state and as such is commander-in-chief of the state militia, signs all commissions for state and county officers, fills hundreds of state and county offices by appointment, and has the power of suspension over state and county officers. The Governor is also chief planning and budgeting officer for the state, has veto power over legislative acts, can call special sessions of the Legislature, and can call for adjournment if the Legislature cannot agree upon a time.
The Executive Office of the Governor was created in 1979 (Ch. 79-190, Laws). The Office is comprised of staff members handling the administrative functions required by the Governor. The Office also houses various committees, commissions, and councils created by the Governor.
Summary:
This series documents a variety of transportation issues and activities. Included are subject and reference files that document the needs and activities of the Department of Transportation, as well as local transportation authorities and other agencies with transportation (mainly highway) concerns. Also included are legislative files and related correspondence that track the legislation dealing with these transportation issues.
