	Biographical/Historical:	In August 1990, the armed forces of Iraq invaded Kuwait in an attack of conquest. The United States, in concert with a coalition of United Nations forces, began a military mission to protect Saudi Arabia from a similar fate at the hands of the Iraqi forces arrayed upon its border with occupied Kuwait. After several months of diplomatic confrontation, the United Nations passed several resolutions demanding the withdrawal of Iraq from Kuwait and authorizing the use of force to secure that objective. Shortly after the adoption of these resolutions the United States Congress authorized the use of American forces to implement the United Nations' demands. These votes began the events that culminated in the Persian Gulf War of 1991. To put an effective force into the field the defense establishment of the United States began mobilizing some of its reserve components. Among these units were several from the Florida Army and Air Force National Guard. These units were of a combat support nature and provided the needed "housekeeping" capacity that the active components of the American military lack. These Florida units served throughout the theater of operations in Southwest Asia. The Florida National Guard suffered one non-combat fatality, several non-combat injuries, and two soldiers were awarded the Purple Heart Medal for injuries due to the actions of hostile forces. The last Florida unit to return from Southwest Asia stood down at home station in September 1991.
	Summary:	This series consists of recorded interviews with members of Florida's National Guard that recount their thoughts and actions while serving on active duty in support of operations against Iraq. The interviews provide insightful accounts that are not normally found in the more formal written after-action reports. Unit Commanding Officers, First Sergeants, and senior enlisted are the speakers who provide the highlights of those experiences that relate to the position each person held in the activated units. The format is a question and answer with emphasis on the relations among the various levels of military professionalism, i.e. Regular (active duty), Reserve, and National Guard in the U.S. Army forces in theater and prior to the deployment of these units from the United States. Not all the Florida units activated for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm are represented in this series. Due to the use of several different recording devices some tapes may require the manipulation of the variable speed lever on the cassette players in the research room.
