Biographical/Historical:     Between 18 and 21 September 1926, a category four hurricane struck South Florida. With sustained winds of over a 100 mph -- the first time such an occurrence had ever been recorded -- the storm caused millions of dollars in damage, ruining South Florida's crops as well as its real estate and tourism business, and killed over 400 residents. Most residents died as the eye passed through; ignorant that the storm was not yet finished, many ventured to assess the damage and were trapped without shelter. Over 55,000 Floridians were without electricity and another 40,000 were rendered homeless. At a time before named hurricanes, the 1926 hurricane was known as the "Great Miami Hurricane."

Summary:     The collection contains 42 prints and 10 negatives depicting various Florida locations in the aftermath of the 1926 hurricane. Most of the images are of Miami, including its downtown and hotels, Miami Canal, Miami Beach theater, and Coconut Grove. There are also images of Daytona Beach, West Palm Beach, Hollywood, Ponce DeLeon Springs, citrus groves in Orlando, and the Suwannee River. The images document the architecture and tourist facilities in many of these areas as well as destruction from the hurricane.
