The head of the Department of Military Affairs is the Adjutant General. The Department and the Adjutant General control the Florida units of the National Guard; supervise all the arms, troops, branches, and stores of the Guard; and transport and subsist any armed forces required by the state to maintain law and order. The Department and the Adjutant General maintain their headquarters in St. Augustine. The state militia has existed since territorial days, becoming the Florida State Troops in 1887 (Ch. 3707, Laws) and the Florida National Guard in 1909 (Ch. 5930, Laws).

Summary: ****DEACCESSIONED****    This series contains orders issued by the Department of Military Affairs and its predecessor, the Military Department, relating to the Florida National Guard. These orders deal primarily with personnel matters such as enlistments, discharges, appointments, resignations, and assignments to initial active duty and duty stations of members of the Guard. Most of these orders are entitled "Special Orders," although for a brief time, from 1956 to 1962, the Adjutant General issued some orders as "Letter Orders" in addition to the special orders. The series includes original copies of special orders for 1930 and 1953-1959, and original copies of letter orders from 1956 to 1962. All special and letter orders from 1915-1981 are on microfilm.
