Biographical/Historical:     The Florida Legislature created the Department of Military Affairs in 1973 to succeed the Military Department (Chapter 73-93, Laws of Florida). The head of the Department of Military Affairs is the Adjutant General. The Department and the Adjutant General control the Florida units of the National Guard; supervise all the arms, troops, branches, and stores of the Guard; and transport and subsist any armed forces required by the state to maintain law and order. The Department and the Adjutant General maintain their headquarters in St. Augustine. The state militia has existed since territorial days, becoming the Florida State Troops in 1887 (Ch. 3707, Laws) and the Florida National Guard in 1909 (Ch. 5930, Laws.)
Summary:     The series contains images of individuals, groups, and units of the Florida State Troops and Florida National Guard from the period of the Spanish-American War to 1987. Included are many panoramic views of units and campsites as well as groups of officers and enlisted personnel.

    While the series contains a few photographs of troops in national service during the wars of this time, most illustrate the training and state service activities of the National Guard between the world wars. Also included are several photographs of the Florida troops engaged in the activities of the Mexican Punitive Expedition of 1916.
