Terms Governing Use:
Biographical/Historical:     John Randal McDonald (1922-2003) was a prominent architect who worked in Wisconsin and Florida during the 1950s and 1960s. McDonald was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and served in World War II as an officer in the U.S. Navy before pursuing a degree in architecture at Yale University. He worked for a short time for Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin (studio) in Spring Green, Wisconsin. This stint, along with Wright's philosophy of architecture, had a profound impact on McDonald and his subsequent career as an architect.

McDonald's work is often compared to Wright's because nature is a continuous theme in his design.  Initially, McDonald predominately made designs for private residences. As his success and notoriety increased, he was commissioned to design monasteries, hotels, factories, dormitories, schools, and churches across the country and abroad. In 1963, McDonald expanded his business to South Florida and eventually had architectural firms in St. Croix, Clearwater, Fort Lauderdale, and Boca Raton.

Summary:     This collection consists of John Randal McDonald's architectural drawings of churches, business buildings, and private residences in Florida. Also included are some photographs, slides, prints, and negatives of some of the completed works.
