The Hartsfield, Langston, and Haynes families lived in the Tallahassee, Sopchoppy, and Smith Creek, Florida (Leon and Wakulla counties) areas. Eley Jackson Langston (1873-1966) was the son of J. B. and Celia Langston. Eley was a farmer in Smith Creek; he produced comb and extracted honey and beeswax and had a cane grinding business. He married Tallahassee school teacher Clara Hartsfield (1881-1955), daughter of Gilbert and Mary Hartsfield, on March 17, 1901, and they had five children: Eva E. (1902-1992), Mamie Claudia (1904-1986), Amos Irvin (1911-1991), Gilbert Jackson (1913-1971), and Alton Dean (1918-1980).
Clara's father, Gilbert Hartsfield, was the eldest son of Thomas and Catherine Hartsfield, born on March 12, 1857. Gilbert married Mary Ann "Molly" Atkinson on January 11, 1880. Their marriage produced 11 children: Clara, Frank, Claudia, Jonas, Julius, Annie, Edna, Lottie, Ellie, Edith Mae, and Ralph. Gilbert was a farmer and was involved in local politics, serving two terms in the Florida State Legislature.
Frank Hartsfield, the eldest son of Gilbert and Mary Ann, was a well-known teacher and principal in North Florida and served as Leon County's Superintendent of Education for 20 years before his death at the age of 54. Hartsfield Elementary School in Tallahassee is named in Frank's memory. Ralph Hartsfield, the youngest child of Gilbert and Mary Ann, was a lawyer in Tallahassee from 1930 to 1933. He served as County Prosecutor in Wakulla County for one year before accepting employment within state government. Ralph served 18 years with the state, ten of which were with the State Road Department.
