Biographical/Historical:     John Welborn Martin, Florida's 24th governor (January 6, 1925-January 8, 1929), was born in Plainfield in Marion County on June 21, 1884, the son of John M. and Willie (Owens) Martin. He attended school for four years, then continued his education by study at night. Admitted to the bar in 1914, he began to practice law in Jacksonville. He was Mayor of Jacksonville for three consecutive terms, from 1917-1924, and returned there after his term as Governor of Florida.

    During his tenure as governor, Martin presided over a land boom that attracted national attention. He oversaw statewide advancements of roads and highways, financed public schools by direct state appropriations, and furnished free textbooks to students in the first six grades. In 1928, Martin ran for but lost the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat, and lost again in his 1932 run for the governorship. In the 1940s, Martin returned to Jacksonville and became co-trustee, and later the sole trustee, of the Florida East Coast Railroad. He died in Jacksonville on February 22, 1958. Martin County, Florida is named for him.

Summary:     This collection consists primarily of photographs of Governor John Martin, including various public events, speeches, and in candid moments. Also included are several portraits, images of Martin both as a young man and in the 1950s, programs to various events, newspaper clippings, and a few images of his wife, Lottie Martin. The collection also contains a folder of correspondence related to Martin's 1932 gubernatorial campaign.
