Biographical/Historical:     Richard Bernard Stone (1928-2019) was an attorney, Florida and United States Senator, and diplomat. Stone began practicing law in Miami, Florida in the mid-1950s. In 1967 he won election to the Florida Senate where he served until his election as Florida's Secretary of State in 1970. Stone went on to be the Democratic party nominee for the U.S. Senate in 1974 and was elected in a three-way race with 43 percent of the vote.

    During Stone's term in the U.S. Senate, he served on the Foreign Relations Committee and as chairman of the Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs. Senator Stone also served on the Veterans' Affairs Committee as well as the Agriculture, Forestry, and Nutrition Committees. He voted in support of the development of a "neutron bomb" and against amnesty for draft dodgers and federal funding of abortion. He supported the passage of the Panama Canal treaties, which returned the Canal Zone to Panama and turned over the canal to Panamanian operation.

    After his failed re-election bid in 1980, Senator Stone entered private law practice in Washington, D.C. From March 1981 to March 1982 he was a registered agent of Guatemala and briefly held the same position for Taiwan. In 1982 Senator Stone left the practice of law and became Vice Chairman of Capital Bank in Washington, D.C. He also began consulting for the U.S. Department Of State in the area of public diplomacy. In June 1983, President Ronald Reagan appointed Stone as a special envoy to Central America. He served in that post until February of 1984 when he returned to the private practice of law.
Summary:     This collection consists of legislative files, constituent correspondence, and tape recordings documenting the U.S. Senate career of Richard B. Stone. Legislative files include Senate voting records, 1974 campaign files, correspondence files, news releases/clippings, speeches/writings, and photographs. Also included are background research files on topics of interest to the Senator, such as agriculture, foreign relations, and veterans' affairs. The constituent correspondence includes letters to Stone expressing opinions on the topics under consideration in Congress. The tape recordings are mostly speeches and interviews; some are broadcasts of Senate hearings.
