Biographical/Historical: ****DEACCESSIONED****John Pond fought with the 149th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War.  He and others of his regiment were captured by Confederates after the Battle of the Wilderness and sent to the prisoner of war camp at Andersonville, Georgia.  Pond escaped, was recaptured after a week, and was then imprisoned in Florence, South Carolina, where he met up with acquaintances from his Andersonville imprisonment.  He was later imprisoned in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he died in December 1864.

Summary: ****DEACCESSIONED****This collection consists primarily of the Civil War diary of John Pond detailing his imprisonment at Andersonville, Georgia, his escape and recapture, and his subsequent imprisonment at Florence, South Carolina.  The diary begins in February 1864, about three months before his first capture by Confederate forces.  Also in the collection are three photographic portraits, once each of Minnie Pond, Walter Buhlmon, and Myron Pond, and a letter dated February 3, 1867 to Pond's sister from W.G. Bonsell relating details of his friendship with Pond during their imprisonment in both Georgia and South Carolina.
